The Korean Pipeline $28.68 The Korean War began in June 1950 and ended in July 1953. During that short period of time, more than 5.7 million American soldiers were sent to Korea; 34,000 Americans were killed in action and over 20,000 were killed in non-combat accidents. The Korean War started so abruptly that the United States had to quickly mobilize large numbers of enlisted men to be sent to the Korean theater of war. This mobilization and subsequent funneling of troops from civilian status to the front line in Korea in a matter of weeks became known as the Korean Pipeline. This novel follows three enlisted men from their initial recall to active duty, to their combat service in Korea, and to what finally happened to them. The war ground on for three years and finally ended in a virtual stalemate where it all started, at the 38th parallel in Korea in July 1953. |

Very quickly they organized us into military units. After a few months, he deserted the NKPA and returned to Seoul where he joined the South Korean Marine Corps. Ho's experience is only one of the many compelling accounts found in Voices from the Korean War. British Prisoners of the Korean War (Hardcover) $233.37 During the Korean War nearly a thousand British servicemen, along with a handful of British civilians, were captured by North Korean and Red Chinese forces. In various camps in the vicinity of Pyongyang and villages along the Yalu River these men found themselves subjected to a prolonged effort by the enemy to undermine their allegiance to the Crown and enlist them in various propaganda campaigns directed against the UN war effort. British Prisoners of the korean War is the first academic study to examine in detail exactly what happened to the major groups of British military and civilian prisoners held in different locations at various junctures between 1950 and 1953. It explores the extent to which factors such as exposure to the actions of the North Koreans as against the Red Chinese, evolving physical conditions, enemy re-education efforts, communist attempts at blackmail, British attitudes towards the Americans, and personal background and leadership qualities among captives themselves influenced the willingness and ability of the British prisoners to collaborate or resist. Thanks to the availability of hitherto classified or underutilized source materials, it is now possible to test the common popular assumption-based on official accounts and memoirs from the 1950s-that, in marked contrast to their American cousins, British captives in the Korean War were pretty much immune to communist efforts at subverting their loyalty. The results suggest that British attitudes and actions while in enemy hands were rather more nuanced and varied than previously assumed. |

The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War $3.94 In 1972, award-winning reporter David Halberstam's magisterial and thrilling The Best and the Brightest set the gold standard for Vietnam War books. Now, more than three decades later, Halberstam uses his unrivaled research and formidable journalistic skills to shed light on another dark corner in our history: the Korean War. The Coldest Winter is a successor book to The Best and the Brightest even though in historical terms it precedes it, and Halberstam's final chapters provide us with an ominous lead-in to Vietnam and the events of today. Up until now, the Korean War has been the black hole of modern American history. The Coldest Winter changes that. Halberstam gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculation on both sides, culminating with the massive entry of Chinese forces near the Yalu, which catches Douglas MacArthur's forces by surprise. At the same time, Halberstam provides us with his trademark highly evocative narrative journalism of several crucial battles--reportage of the highest order. As such we watch a melancholy political story play out even as we witness the rare courage of the fighting men who deal with the consequences of dangerous miscalculations. The Coldest Winter is contemporary history in its most literary and luminescent form. |

The Korean Americans $55 Korean Americans are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States. Although they share many similar cultural characteristics with other Asian Americans, the Korean Americans are unique in terms of their strong ethnic attachment, extensive participation in Christian churches, heavy involvement in self-employed small businesses, wide geographic dispersion in settlement, and the emergence of the 1.5 generation phenomenon. This book answers the following questions for the student or interested reader: ¥ Who are the Korean people? ¥ Why did they come to the United States? ¥ How did they adapt to their new country? ¥ How are they received by the majority of Americans? ¥ What are their accomplishments, problems, and contributions to American society? Other special features include: ¥ An extensive coverage on the ethnic background (history, language, religion, customs, and other cultural heritage) of Korean Americans. ¥ Current statistical data on Korean immigration to the United States. ¥ A comprehensive analysis of socioeconomic characteristics of Korean Americans as compared with those of other minority groups. ¥ A succinct analysis of the unique characteristics of Korean Americans. ¥ Effective use of personal narratives. In 1970 there were about 70,000 Korean AmericansÑthe number grew tenfold to about 790,000 in 1990. The Korean American population is now estimated at well over a million, and demographic projections indicate that the number will reach about three million by the year 2030. Korean Americans are thus among the new groups of Americans to become another integral part of the American history of cultural pluralism and ethnic diversity. Examined are the most significant areas of Korean American's adaptationÑeconomic adjustment, sociocultural adaptation, family life, ethnic associations, intergroup relations, and psychological adjustment. In each area of adaptation, positive attainment as well as the problems of adjustment are analyzed in light of current theories and empirical research. The book concludes with a discussion of the unique characteristics of Korean Americans and their impact on society. |

Korean Noodles $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Korean noodles are noodles or noodle dishes in Korean cuisine and are collectively referred to as guksu in native Korean or myeon in hanja. Preparations and cooking with noodles are relatively simple, so the history is longer than that of bread, dating back around BCE. 6000 to BCE 5000 in Asia. While noodles were eaten in Korea from ancient times, productions of wheat was less than other crops, so noodles did not become a daily food until 1945. Buckwheat and wheat noodles were specialty foods for birthdays, weddings or auspicious occasions because the long and continued shape were thought to be associated with the bliss for longevity and longlasting marriage. Voices from the Korean War: Personal Accounts of Those Who Served $46.66 "Voices from the Korean War" presents a collection of first-person accounts of those who served in the Korean War. The Korean War is often dubbed the "Forgotten War," although more than 36,000 soldiers died in this three-year conflict. In "Voices from the Korean War, " author Douglas Rice makes certain the men who served are not forgotten as he shares first-person accounts from "seventy-nine" soldiers who fought in the war from June of 1950 through July of 1953. "Voices from the Korean War" follows the soldiers as they trek and fly over the mountainous terrain of the Korean peninsula. Through these eyewitness accounts, hear a soldier describe what happened to a small group of North Korean villagers who refused to divulge their location. Listen in as a wounded soldier tells a flight nurse the story of how he was rescued by American soldiers as he lay wounded in a North Korean home. Learn how some prisoners of war walked their imaginary dogs to irritate their captors. This compilation of different soldiers' perspectives conveys what it must have been like to be directly involved in the conflict. It serves as a reminder of the challenges and the sacrifices the soldiers made in the name of war. |

Chosin: Heroic Ordeal of the Korean War $18.38 It was 1950, a brutally cold November in North Korea, and the war seemed all but over. And then a force of nearly 70,000 Chinese "volunteers" crossed the Yalu River, encircling the 30,000 United Nations troops at the Chosin Reservoir. The epic story of what followed--one of the iconic battles in Marine history--is told for the first time in gut-level detail in this book. From the point of view of the men in the foxholes and tanks, outposts and command posts, Chosin offers a harrowing, firsthand account of the 1st Marine Divisions breakout battle against overwhelming Chinese forces in the bitter North Korean winter. Seasoned military historian Eric Hammel describes the errors and miscalculations by American higher-ups that left the division strung out at the end of a narrow road scores of miles from the sea. Then he plunges into the action: the massing of Chinese forces; the punishing climate and terrain; the high-level over-confidence that crippled the American command; and the onset of the overpowering Chinese assault. His account provides a wealth of tactical and human detail and small unit action: from an intelligence officers efforts to make sense of conflicting reports, to engineers improvising a bridge from logs and snow, from Marines marching to POW camps, to a battle-weary messengers discovery of headquarter staff safely ensconced behind friendly lines, settling down in formal dress to a full-course dinner. The result is the most complete book ever written on this heroic battle, a masterful narrative from the perspective of those who fought. Previously published under the same title by Vanguard Press, 1981, ISBN - 081490856X; and by Presidio Press, 1990, ISBN - 089141782. |

Korean Name $113.11 A Korean name consists of a family name followed by a given name, as used by the Korean people in both North Korea and South Korea. In the Korean language, ireum or seongmyeong usually refers to the family name (seong) and given name (ireum in a narrow sense) together. A long history of the use of family names has caused surname extinction. There are only about 250 Korean family names currently in use, and the three most common (Kim, Lee, and Park) account for nearly half of the population. The family name is typically a single syllable, and the given name two syllables. There is no middle name in the Western sense. Many Koreans have their given names made of a generational name syllable and an individually distinct syllable, while this practice is declining in the younger generations. The generational name syllable is shared by siblings in North Korea, and by all members of the same generation of an extended family in South Korea. Married men and women usually keep their full personal names, and children inherit the fathers family name. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 208 Publication Date: 2010/06/05 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.48 inches |

Korean American Women $70 Current models of acculturation in multicultural counseling literature are severely limited in describing how individuals deal with the complexity of culture change. The reasons for immigration, the historical period during which the immigration occurred, educational and socioeconomic levels, ethnic community and religious involvements, family functioning, and social support, to name a few, all have an impact in the process of cultural adaptation. This book examines Korean American women's dual-cultural identity. By utilizing multiple case studies, the book highlights: (1) the complexity of issues involved as individuals go through different levels of culture change, and (2) the multiplicity of people negotiating their lives in the dual-cultural context and creating meaning out of many ambiguous and even contradictory life situations. |

She reluctantly agrees to be a contestant on the reality television show Biological Clock . The show’s premise: Six eligible singles date each other, and the audience votes on which couple would make the best parents. Dating Is Murder $4.34 Wollie Shelley, the plucky amateur sleuth "Kirkus Reviews" called "funny, brave, smart, and altogether the fetchingest crime heroine since the early Stephanie Plum," returns to face suspect lovers and unlovable suspects in this hilarious sequel to "Dating Dead Men." Wollie Shelley is a greeting card artist struggling to keep afloat financially and to pursue--despite a series of recent disasters--the search for the love of her life. She reluctantly agrees to be a contestant on the reality television show "Biological Clock." The show's premise: Six eligible singles date each other, and the audience votes on which couple would make the best parents. Alas, Wollie isn't having much luck finding a man she'd like to date "off the air," much less father her child. As her own biological clock ticks away, Wollie gets caught up in a much more pressing demand on her time. Her friend Annika has vanished into thin air, and Wollie is convinced that she's in grave danger. When Wollie reports the disappearance to the Los Angeles Police Department, however, the detective assigned to the case seems more interested in dating Wollie than in finding her friend. Dating Game $3.95 In her 57th bestselling novel, Danielle Steel brilliantly chronicles the roller-coaster ride of dating the second time around--and tells a captivating story of the surprises one woman encounters when she's thrust into the terrifying, exhilarating world of the Dating Game. Paris Armstrong never saw it coming. With two grown children and a lovely home in Connecticut, Paris was happy with her marriage, her family, her life. So when her husband of twenty-four years said they needed to talk, Paris couldn't imagine what he was about to say. "I want a divorce," Peter tells her. Just like that, the husband she adored had dumped her for a younger woman. And just like that, Peter and his thirty-one-year-old lover had made their plans for their future, leaving Paris to pick up the pieces of a shattered life. Within days, Peter was gone. And Paris was left to figure out how she intended to get through the next day, let alone the rest of her life. The task could not have been more painful. First came the tears. Then the excruciating attempts by well-meaning friends to "fix her up" with men who paled in comparison to Peter. Worse yet, she still loved him. Finally, Paris realized she was in a fight for her very survival. Drastic measures were called for. Even her shrink agreed. It was time to move--as far away as possible, just after Peter remarried. Paris had never felt, or been, more alone. Saying good-bye to the world she knew and loved, Paris heads west, to San Francisco, and discovers being single in a world full of men who were too young, too old, too married, or too good to be true. For Paris, the list seemed endless...the charming commitment-phobe...the drunken Neanderthal...the young Frenchman--so adorably sexy she almost forgot about his age, and did, for a while. With her dating track record veering between disappointing and disastrous, and her daughter now engaged to a man Paris's age, Paris finally comes to the conclusion that romance is not in her future. That's when her small circle of offbeat, loving friends becomes more important than ever before. And a decision Paris makes only for herself changes her life once more. The secret, she discovers finally, is in finding the gifts in life's unexpected twists and turns, and turning despair into freedom and loss into joy. In a poignant, wickedly funny novel about getting dumped and getting over it, about tackling life with both courage and laughter, Danielle Steel explores what it means to start over, whether you wanted to or not, and finding something better than you had before. |

Korean-American Experience in the United States: Initial Thoughts $27.96 "A very exciting book on Koreans in the United States " This book is very helpful for understanding the nature and the history of the Korean community in the USA. There are over one million Korean-Americans in the USA. Despite the small number and a short immigration history, Korean-Americans have been able to contribute to America in important ways. Korean-American students generally comprise the biggest block of ethnic minorities in Ivy League universities and other leading research universities. The current Yale University Law School Dean is Korean-American. A Korean-American has been the leader of the biggest Presbyterian denomination in the USA. Korean-Americans can be found all over the USA in every profession, and they have been very successful. And, perhaps, the Korean-American community is the most evangelical Christian ethnic community in America. In fact, many InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and Campus Crusade for Christ leaders in America's major universities are Korean-Americans. How is it that Korean-Americans came to play such an important role in the American society, particularly in the area of religion? This is a very good book to understand what makes the Korean-Americans "tick." Particularly insightful are the ways in which Christian Kim, the author, captures general patterns for the Korean-Americans and their successes. This is by far the best introductory book on Korean-Americans in the market and will be very useful for use in classroom settings, both on the high school and college levels, in courses dealing with ethnic studies and the Asian experience in American history and society. |

Truman, MacArthur and the Korean War $17.77 At 4:00 a.m. on June 25, 1950, North Korean artillery began pounding South Korean positions: the Korean War began. American officials had seriously underestimated the North Korean forces that quickly invaded South Korea nearly overrunning the country. US intelligence had failed to predict the attack. In Japan, General Douglas MacArthur was sending in gloomy reports after President Truman had decided the US had to stand up to Communist aggression in East Asia. A duel began between the president and the general throughout the first full year of the war, ending with the sacking of the man many Americans considered a national hero. |

Contentious Spirits: Religion in Korean American History, 1903-1945 $23.5 "Contentious Spirits" explores the role of religion in Korean American history during the first half of the twentieth century in Hawai'i and California. Historian David K. Yoo argues that religion is the most important aspect of this group's experience because its structures and sensibilities address the full range of human experience. Framing the book are three relational themes: religion & race, migration & exile, and colonialism & independence. In an engaging narrative, Yoo documents the ways in which religion shaped the racialization of Korean in the United States, shows how religion fueled the transnational migration of Korean Americans and its connections to their exile, and details a story in which religion intertwined with the visions and activities of independence even as it was also entangled in colonialism. The first book-length study of religion in Korean American history, it will appeal to academics and general readers interested in Asian American history, American religious history, and ethnic studies. |

Song of Myself: A Korean-American Life $15.44 Although Yearn Choi identifies himself as an ordinary man, his has been a remarkable life...the odyssey of a Korean in America. Naturally, because it is a memoir, this book explores the theme of identity. What does life on the hyphen (Korean-American) mean for his generation versus his children's generation? Yet the author's journey intersects with the trajectory of this country in the midst of struggle and transformation. What is America? Choi lived, studied, and worked in the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, the Deep South, and the nation's capital over four decades, while the U.S. was in the throes of the civil rights, anti-war, anti-nuclear, and environmental movements. Artful, informative, heartfelt, provocative, and always engaging, Choi's memoir will prove an invaluable and unique contribution to American and Asian Studies by a seminal poet and incisive scholar. With Song of Myself, Yearn Hong Choi immediately signals Walt Whitman. Yet he rivals Whitman in style and exceeds Whitman in scope. from the Forward by Ellen Olmstead, Professor of English, Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland |

The Grace of Sophia: A Korean North American Women's Christology $12.4 Korean North American women live with a legacy of severe oppression, which has been passed down through generations. In Korea, women suffered under prevailing religious beliefs and cultural practices. When they immigrated to North America, they remained dominated and subordinated, due to barriers such as racism, classism, and sexism. Grace Ji-Sun Kim asks, what is the "good news" for these women, and how can they come to understand God is with them? Kim's visionary work is also a pioneering effort -- Korean North American women's theology is in an early stage of development and she is one of only a few Korean North American women theologians. Kim exposes an additional layer of oppression for Korean North American women -- an accumulation of han. She characterizes han as a prevalent sense of unresolved resentment against injustice suffered and a sense of helplessness because of the overwhelming odds against them. The Grace of Sophia proposes that linking Jesus with Sophia can be a meaningful way of portraying Christ to Korean North American women. The biblical figure Sophia, understood in conjunction with wisdom elements of Asian religious tradition, will offer a liberating and healing Christology for these women. |
